About Vietnam - Land of Charm - Land of Intrigue .....

Vietnam is a thriving country and today a country at peace. Vietnam extends 1600 kilometers from China to the Gulf of Thailand.  It is the 13th most populous country in the world.  Vietnam is a beautiful jewel of SE Asia with it's rugged mountains and crags, tangled riverways, rural rice paddies, blossoming economy and an ever-present charm and beauty.

The Vietnamese people are descendants of the Kinh people who migrated into the Red River Delta around 2000 years ago.  Most ethnic Vietnamese are Buddhist, with a large mix of Taoism and Confucianism.  There are about 1 million Chinese mostly living in the southern part of the country.  The Montagnard's are hill tribes of around 8 million people that live in the mountains of north and central Vietnam.

For years the 17th parallel was the border between the Democratic Republic of Vietnam to the north, and the Republic of Vietnam to the south.  Saigon fell on April 30, 1975 to the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, and the country of Vietnam became one once again.

Vietnam today is a member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).  With diplomatic relations with the US, Vietnam moves to bcome an industrialized nation with a somewhat liberalized market economy.

Hanoi is the intellectual, artistic and political center of Vietnam.  While Saigon / Ho Chi Minh City remains the pocketbook of the economy, Hanoi will always be the heart and mind of Vietnam.  Haiphong is located in the Red River Delta in the north.  It is Vietnam's third largest city and largest port.  The ancient capital of Hue is another spiritual, artistic and cultural center of the country. Royal Hue remains quiet with it's tree-lined streets near the old Citadel and Imperial City.

Dalat is one of the most unique destinations.  Intriguing architecture, natural beauty and colorful local people.  This part of Vietnam is a mountain retreat.  Hoi An is a World Heritage site as an example of a Southeast Asian trading port of the 15-16th centuries displayng a unique blend of local and foreign influences.  Hoi An is also famed for its old Cao lau noodle, which can only be uniquely served here.

Ho Chi Minh City / Saigon has always been the center of wealth for Vietnam.  Sitting on the Saigon River, this southern city is daily hustle and bustle.  There is District 1, Cholon and floating restaurants sitting along the Saigon river.

And finally, the Mekong Delta with Can Tho to the very south of Vietnam displays a rural life very different from the rest of the country.  The Delta feeds much of Vietnam and produces enough surplus to make Vietnam the third largest rice exporter in the world.

Vietnam     is truly a Land of Charm, the old and the new, and a Land of Intrigue.
